EQUINE ORAL GLUCOSE ABSORPTION TEST
The oral glucose absorption test is recommended as an aid in the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (granulomatous, eosinophilic, lymphocytic and basophilic enteritis) in the horse.

PROTOCOL

  1. Fast the horse for 18 to 24 hours and take a basal oxalate fluoride blood sample.
  2. Administer 1g/kg glucose as a 10% solution by stomach tube.
  3. Collect oxalate fluoride blood samples at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 minutes post glucose administration.
INTERPRETATION

In a normal horse, peak concentrations of glucose of approximately twice the resting concentration occur at 60-120 minutes post administration. Concentrations should return to normal by 6 hours post administration.
